Sexual Assault Services
We offer one on one peer counseling.  If you have been raped of experienced a sexual assault please, talk to someone about it.  All out services are confidential.


What is Sexual Assault?

Sexual Assault is a crime of violence, power and control. It occurs when a person is forced, threatened, or coerced or manipulated into sexual contact against his or her will.


Sexual Assault includes:
*rape-sexual intercourse against a person's will
*forcible sodomy-anal or oral sex against a person's will
*forcible object penetration-penetrating someone's vagina or anus, or causing that person to penetrate her or himself against that person's will
*marital rape and marital sexual assault
*unwanted sexual touching
*statutory rape-sexual contact with minor
*incest
*any unwanted or coerced sexual contact

Other sexual crimes include:
*sexual harassment
*solicitation of minors through the internet

Possible reactions to sexual assault


*not be able to sleep or concentrate
*be afraid to go out or to stay at home
*have memories that disrupt work and daily life
*have no appetite; or want to eat all the time
*not be able to trust anyone
*be depressed
*avoid friends and family
*feel physical symptoms of stress
*feel dirty
*have panic attacks
*feel suicidal
*drink or abuse drugs
*feel worthless
*feel numb
*shame
*guilt
*anger


Statistics

According to the U.S. Dept. of Justice...
1 in every 4 rapes take place in a public area or in a parking garage
1 out of 3 women is sexually assaulted in her lifetime
1out of 4 girls is sexually assaulted before the age of 18
1 out of 10 boys is sexually assaulted before the age of 18
29% of female victims reported that the offender was a stranger
68% of rapes occur between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Types of Rape

Acquaintance Rape is the most common form of rape and is often called "hidden rape." The person is usually familiar with the assailant by sight or has known the assailant for some time.
Stranger Rape occurs when the person does not know the assailant. This is the type of rape most people think of.
Gang Rape is committed by two or more people against another person. This type of rape is often planned.


If you know someone who has been sexually assaulted
*give unconditional support by listening
*tell the victim it is not his or her fault
*allow the victim to make his or her own decisions
*encourage the victim to get a medical check-up
*encourage the victim to seek help from a sexual assault crisis center
